Hugh Downs, whose television career spanned more than six decades, died yesterday in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 99 years old.
Perhaps best known as the host of ABC’s “20/20” newsmagazine, Downs also had stints with NBC’s “Today” show and as the host of many game shows. Early in his career, his distinctive voice and delivery made him a sought-after announcer and commercial presenter.
Downs provoked a bit of controversy upon his retirement from “20/20” in 1999, when he was asked if he had any personal opinions he wished to present, given that he had spent so many years as an impartial news anchor. Downs replied that he believed marijuana should be legalized.
Downs’ wife Ruth Shaheen Downs, whom he married in 1944, passed away three years ago at the age of 95.
