Senior defensive tackle Emmanuel Duron of the Edinburg High School was ejected from Thursday night’s football game against the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School Bears. Moments after referee Fred Garcia announced the ejection, Duron ran back onto the field and blindsided Garcia, knocking him to the ground.
Players and coaches from Edinburg escorted Duron away from the downed official, while the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo players tried to defend the referee.
Garcia was taken off the field in a cart, but was later seen walking near an ambulance where he was being treated for a reported shoulder injury and concussion symptoms. Duron was escorted from the stadium by four Edinburg Police officers.
A member of the school’s soccer and wrestling teams, Duron reportedly had a similar incident where he attacked an official during a soccer game. Duron was named All-Area Boys Wrestler of the Year by the local newspaper last season.
Edinburg has announced that it is withdrawing from the state championship tournament in the wake of the incident and will assess a punishment on Duron after discussions among school leadership.
People convicted of the misdemeanor Class A Assault in Texas can be sentenced up to one year in prison and/or fined up to $4,000.
