Daniel Foote, the top United States diplomat to Haiti, resigned his position citing the administration’s treatment of Haitian migrants along the southern border in Texas, calling the actions “inhumane,” NBC News reports.
“With deep disappointment and apologies to those seeking crucial changes, I resign from my position as Special Envoy for Haiti, effective immediately,” he said in his resignation letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday.
Foote’s resignation comes in reaction to the administration ordering the deportation of thousands of Haitians who traveled to the United States through Mexico. The Biden Administration has chartered planes to carry thousands of people back to Haiti, which is still struggling with the effects of multiple hurricanes and earthquakes.
Photos published by multiple news agencies earlier this week apparently showed Border Patrol officers on horseback using reins to whip migrants, who have gathered near a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. The agency has suspended officers involved.
“Our policy approach to Haiti remains deeply flawed, and my recommendations have been ignored and dismissed, when not edited to project a narrative different from my own,” said Foote in his resignation letter.
