In an Associated Press piece titled literally “Worried about losing in 2024, Iowa’s Republican voters are less interested in talking about abortion,” as if avoiding the topic somehow makes it go away, a Trump fan interviewed at a MAGA rally said “At this stage, if we’re going to continually lose elections because of that issue, I’d say dump the whole damn thing and let God be the judge.”
“It used to be an issue for me. I guess it’s not a real hot-button issue today. Women in general are getting smarter about birth control and about how everything works” said a Republican woman at an event for Nimrata “Nikki” Haley, whom the AP writes that she “described herself as pro-life but said she doesn’t like how ugly the politics of abortion have become.” They did not add “for Republicans.”
“It’s an issue that’s very important to these evangelical voters but because that’s where we’re at here in Iowa, I suppose maybe there’s other issues that are really important right now,” said RNC committeeman and president of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Steve Scheffler, adding that Governor Kim Reynolds already “kind of addressed” abortion in the state with a six-week ban.
Haley fan Dan Corbin was a little more blunt about the “need to have a strategic approach” and to not “demonize women that are having to make that decision… I don’t believe in abortion in any way, shape or form. But I think it’s going to make the Republicans less attractive.” No shit.
