“The United States Constitution, article II, section 1, clause 2 states that, ‘Each state shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress.'”
“It is the responsibility of the Arizona Secretary of State to certify elections, including elections for President of the United States, but the sole authority to appoint presidential electors is granted to the Legislature. Therefore be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring: 1. That the Legislature shall remain in session during years in which presidential elections are held, and 2. That the Legislature, and no other official, shall appoint presidential electors in accordance with the United States Constitution,” says the text of AZ SCR 1014 as introduced Monday by Republican Arizona state Senator Anthony Kern, emphasis ours.
It’s not like Kern has any skin in the game on this one. He just wants it to be constitutional. The bill has nothing to do with the fact that Kern signed one of the fake Trump 2020 electoral college certificates and is probably under criminal investigation for doing that – or that he is credibly suspected of having entered the Capitol on January 6th. Nothing to see here, libs.
Sarcasm aside, this is just a bullshit messaging bill. Republicans have a one-seat majority in each chamber and the governor is a Dem. There’s no chance it will ever pass or be signed into law.
