“The Department has no tolerance for violence and illegal threats of violence against public officials, government offices, and election infrastructure. These crimes are attacks on our democracy. As the Deputy Attorney General stated in remarks last month, ‘[f]or the right to vote to be real for every American, election officials – who are often volunteers – must be able to do their jobs free from improper influence, physical threats, or any other conduct designed to intimidate.'”
“In the last two months, we witnessed two horrific attempts by fellow Americans on the life of presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump. And we have seen foreign actors plot to assassinate current and former US Government officials. In recent years, we have seen a dangerous increase in threats of violence directed at election officials, workers, and volunteers, as well as to federal and state officials, judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and other public servants. Indeed, we have accelerated our efforts to reverse a dramatic increase in threats against election workers, public servants, and electoral processes, regardless of their origins. Moreover, less than four years ago, the US Capitol was attacked while lawmakers met to affirm the results of a presidential election. The Department deploys every tool at its disposal to combat such violence and threats of violence,” writes Assistant US Attorney General Carlos Uriarte in a letter to the Senate, after they had requested an outline of how the Department is getting ready to deal with an avalanche of bullshit from both home and abroad in the final stretch before election day.
