Arizona GOP chair demands attorney general investigate Katie Hobbs for asking Twitter to take down election disinformation

“Two days ago a bombshell was dropped that Arizona Secretary of State, Katie Hobbs, pressured Twitter to remove posts while she was running to become Governor of Arizona. Yesterday, the same Katie Hobbs certified her own election and crowned herself Governor following weeks of countless testimonies of voter disenfranchisement from poll workers and poll observers… We ask the Attorney General to investigate a possible violation of ARS 16-922 (Title: Independent and Coordinated Expenditures). In this case, Twitter made an expenditure to allow both Arizona Gubernatorial Candidates Hobbs and Lake to advocate for their election, and their opponent’s defeat, on the platform. This would normally be perfectly permissible. However, it appears that Secretary Hobbs, acting in her official capacity, using state resources, and at times in coordination with the Biden Administration, privately asked Twitter to remove posts on her behalf. It was at this point that she may have crossed the line into unlawful coordination,” says a letter from the Arizona GOP Chair Kelli “Chemtrails Kelli” Ward to state Attorney General Mark Brnovich, dated Tuesday.

Here’s the kicker: Chemtrails Kelli doesn’t provide any further details about the alleged crime in the body of the letter. It’s only in a link at the bottom of the second page to a story titled “Governor-Elect Hobbs Dictated Twitter Speech While Secretary of State” from some MAGA Arizona site, citing emails dated January 7th, 2021 in which Hobbs’s office asked Twitter to remove some posts that “falsely assert that the Voter Registration System is owned and operated by foreign actors. This is an attempt to further undermine confidence in the election institution in Arizona.”

Not sure what else to add to this. The fact that there wasn’t even a Biden Administration yet at the time is the most salient inaccuracy here, never mind that in early January 2021 Hobbs was very far from launching her gubernatorial campaign. And even if she had at least informally started, how the fuck does Twitter removing disinformation about the 2020 election constitute an illegal contribution to her bid? Just bad faith on top of bad faith on top of bad faith.
