Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXXVII

  • I’m old enough to remember when conservatives hated activist judges.
  • The GOP debates won’t be anything more than massive hype battles between the loudest candidates, with their fans alternatively cheering and jeering.  It’s the circus atmosphere the MAGA crowd thrives in.
  • Clarence Thomas–who was recruited by a college specifically because he was Black and who said of affirmative action rules, “But for them, God only knows where I would be today”–voted against affirmative action, which should mean we get to reevaluate his credentials because *obviously* he didn’t get into college based on his academic ability.
  • Conservatives imagine education as a unidirectional hose:  the teacher or professor talks and you soak in information.  They do not understand that at every level of the system, the majority of education revolves around the people you’re learning with, not the subject discussed.  Instructors give you data; your classroom interactions teach you skills.  Yes, you learn facts; but more importantly, you learn processes on how to solve problems, both academic and social.  And the more variegated the group–teachers and fellow students–around you is, the more diverse the facts and processes you learn are.
  • The Party that believes in the Unitary Executive is celebrating their Supreme Court limiting Executive Office power.  The reason it doesn’t bother them is simple:  Republicans don’t obey the law when they’re in office, so court rulings don’t apply to them.
  • Easy way to demonstrate “trickle down economics” is a fraud:  Today’s billionaires aren’t funding parks or public works projects.  They’re not donating to schools.  Not even the millionaires are doing that locally.  The billionaires are building rocket ships and failing subs to stroke their egos.  As their wealth skyrockets, the amount the wealthiest Americans donate stays the same, barely covering inflation.  Data show that when Republicans implement tax breaks, charitable giving drops and job creation slows.  They’re hoarding wealth, which his hindering our economy.
  • Thomas claims he’s against Affirmative Action because when he left Yale Law School, he couldn’t get a job with a white-shoe law firm because, he believed, they thought his Yale degree was tainted by preferential admissions.  Given that the last 30 years of his career have been marked by a series of legally-questionable acts and ongoing ethics violations, it’s more likely the firms spotted Thomas’s inherent character flaws and passed on him personally, not racially.  (Seriously, would YOU want to work with him, Mr. Pubes on a Coke can?)
  • I am much less of a ketchup on eggs fan as I’ve gotten older, but I’ll still add some to scrambled eggs.  More likely, I’ll go with a salsa or a hot sauce now.
  • If the recipe says two cloves of garlic, you’re guaranteed to get at least four in this house.
  • While I’m not happy with the revocation of student debt relief, I don’t disagree with the general rationale from the Supreme Court:  that the HEROES Act of 2003 cited by the Administration as justification was improper.  It really was a stretch.  However, I think legislation tying loan repayment to the borrower’s future income–you pay a percentage of your net income (minus a basic cost-of-living allowance)–based on your tax return with all payments stopping after, say, 20 years, even if the loan is not completely paid off, is a fair way to deal with student loan debt in the future.
  • I am actively anti-kettle chip.  I will always forgo chips rather than go kettle.
  • The LGBTQ web designer ruling will go through the wringer the moment a landlord in a Deep Red state refuses to lease an apartment to a mixed-race couple because, they claim, the Bible says it’s immoral.
  • I believe I’ve typed more words about Clarence Thomas in this column than he’s said from the bench in his entire time on the Supreme Court.
  • The evening sky had a vibrant red-orange hue from the Canadian wildfires not unlike the skies after the ash from the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption colored sunsets.
  • In sheer self-owning stupidity, Tommy Tuberville rules the Senate.  From his anti-military hold on promotions because of his anti-choice views to teeing one up on Twitter for Biden, Tuberville does everything he can to harm the people of Alabama, who are already suffering… because they’re living in Alabama.
  • Fourth of July long weekend.  Neighbor already popping off fireworks.  My favorites were the ones dogs hate the most:  the ones that weren’t the big, bright flowers, but the ones that gave a chest-punching BOOM.  (And for those who care:  our pup is a gun dog, so fireworks don’t bother him.  He sleeps through it.)
  • Happy New Half Year!  Here’s to a 2023½ filled with indictments, guilty verdicts and incarcerations to the bastards!  (… assuming, of course, that said bastards are found guilty of crimes in a court of law by a jury of their peers after ensuring their rights under the Constitution are protected.)
