Dems in California’s congressional delegation and in the state legislature are on board with Gov Gavin Newsom’s plan to retaliate for convicted felon President Trump and Texas Republicans’ move to try to squeeze between three and five Lone Star State Dems out through redistricting with a gerrymandering of their own aimed at between five and seven Republicans, Punchbowl reports.
The two options they have for erasing districts such as those held by Republicans Kevin Kiley, Ken Calvert, car thief Darrell Issa, Kim, David Valadao, and Doug LaMalfa include (1) Newsom calls a special session to put a measure on the ballot to rollback Prop 20, the 2010 referendum that established the independent redistricting commission that most of the nine GOP US Representatives in the Golden State owe their seats to. Dems may throw in a “poison pill” of a voter ID law into the ballot measure to entice MAGA voters to back it (2) Just ignore Proposition 20 because California’s state constitution does not explicitly ban redistricting mid-decade. It would however run into a shit ton of legal challenges from Republicans in the state, but it’s the less expensive of the two routes.
