Groundbreaking country music legend Charley Pride died from COVID-19 Saturday at the age of 86, Variety reports.
The first Black person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Pride received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association last month, in a ceremony broadcast November 11th. It would be his last public performance, during which he performed a duet of his classic “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” with Jimmie Allen.
Born in Sludge, Mississippi, Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He won three Grammy Awards in his career and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy in 2017.
Pride is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rozene, and their three children.
