President Joe Biden has officially requested the resignation of Rodney Scott, the chief of the Border Patrol who had been appointed by Donald Trump, as conservative politicians and pundits harp about a crisis at the southern border, NBC News reports.
Working for the Border Patrol since 1992, Scott was appointed the Chief of the US Border Patrol in February 2020, as border crossings dropped in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. He was sent what’s known as a “3 R’s” letter instructing him to retire, resign or request reassignment as a way to spare him the humility of being fired. This is common in government when someone is found to be in an office above their demonstrated skills and capabilities, or when a political leader wants to make a change in a civil service position. Scott will remain in his position an additional 60 days.
Illegal crossings of the southern border have hit a 20 year high, with federal law enforcement agents recording 180,000 “encounters” in May. From October 2020 through May, more than 900,000 people have been intercepted at the border.
Conservative mouthpieces have raised border crossings as an issue since President Biden took office, largely due to the Biden decision to cease construction of Donald Trump’s border wall. Without citing data, Fox News host Sean Hannity has claimed more than two million people have crossed the southern border illegally since Biden has taken office.
Freshman Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (Q-Colorado) introduced a measure on the House floor earlier Wednesday to censure Biden for “[ignoring] the crisis at the southern border.”
