As the Delta variant sweeps across the country, Arkansas has reported its highest daily number of new cases in more than six months with 1,476 infections reported Tuesday, the AP reports.
The number reported is the highest the state has seen since it reported 1,824 cases on February 5th. Hospitalizations in the state rose by 41 to 606. Throughout the state, 94% of the intensive care beds are filled, and only 22% of standard care beds are available. Ninety-eight of those hospitalized with coronavirus in the state are currently on ventilators.
Arkansas has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the United States, at just 35% of the population fully vaccinated versus 48.3% nationally. According to Asa Hutchinson, the state’s Republican governor, 98.3% of those hospitalized in the state since January were unvaccinated.
