Beleaguered Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a lawsuit against the Richardson (Texas) Independent School District, one of the many school districts in the state that are defying Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s mask ban, the Dallas Morning News reports.
The RISD school board voted last week to support Superintendent Jeannie Stone’s order that students and staff are required to wear masks during in-person classes. Stone made the mandate after one of the district’s elementary schools after a COVID outbreak that sent a sixth grader to the intensive care unit.
“Not only are superintendents across Texas openly violating state law, but they are using district resources—that ought to be used for teacher merit raises or other educational benefits—to defend their unlawful political maneuvering,” Paxton said in a statement.
