Random thoughts Friday, Volume LIII

  • Meat Loaf might’ve done anything for love, but he didn’t do a damned thing for health.
  • “There’s a famous statement — ‘sometimes the vote counter is more important than the candidate,’ ” Trump said last Friday.  He was quoting Joseph Stalin from 1923. Trump is literally using Stalinism to overthrow our Constitution.
  • Please stop asking why Garland hasn’t indicted Trump yet–and I say this believing Trump deserves indictment.  It’s barely been a year since the J6 attack, and pursuing a prosecution of a former president should not be rushed into.  As the saying goes, if you aim for the king, you best not miss.  I’d rather have a clean hit that took awhile than have Trump walk away with just shrapnel wounds.
  • Another thing I’m sure hampers the investigation:  prosecutors want to make sure they’re charging Trump et al with all the crimes they’ve committed.  They’re looking for a comprehensive account of responsibility.  When new issues of crime-ing come up, they’ve gotta reset the clock.
  • How did people describe the size of things before there were golf balls and bread boxes?
  • Biden’s seventh press conference of his first year in office demonstrated a grasp of the issues facing the nation and Americans that the previous guy never had.  Where Trump would bloviate, Biden would give thoughtful, complete answers.  (Oh, and Trump only had one press conference in his first year in office.  He also didn’t hold a formal press conference in his last 300 days in office.)
  • Why is Clarence Thomas still a thing?  Shouldn’t he have been kicked off the bench a decade ago?
  • The Pucker Index in the Trump camp reads “extremely tight” right now.  The support structure is crumbling, and without the ability to financially or legally benefit people, Trump is beginning to be treated like the liability he is.  By June, he’ll be alone on that wall.
  • Right now, Tiffany is very happy that she favored her mother over her father.  Her other half-siblings are going to rack up millions in legal fees.
  • Five years ago today, in a sign of what was to come, on its first full day in the White House, the Trump administration removed the White House website pages that outlined policies to address climate change, LGBTQ rights and civil rights.
  • Republicans continue to believe that a man who, while in office, put his daughter and son-in-law in official White House positions even though they were not qualified; commuted the sentences or pardoned more than a dozen officials convicted of fraud, corruption and/or theft; and has been credibly accused of fraud in his business career will “drain the Swamp” and restore integrity to Washington.  That’s just stunning.
  • A Trump-appointed judge strikes down Biden’s coronavirus vaccine mandate.  Next step:  charging higher premiums for their government funded health insurance for people who do not get vaccinated.  Go from zero co-premium to $50 per pay period.  $1,300 out of pocket should get people complying.
  • Do we have any update on Nicki Minaj’s cousin’s friend’s testicles?
  • The Oath Keepers’ seditious conspiracy charges are just the first set that will link various and sundry efforts among various loosely connected groups to overturn the Constitution.  As more groups are identified, the connections will appear higher up the command tree.  Ultimately, it will find someone in the Trump camp was communicating to an individual (Rudy?  Roger Stone?) who was working with these groups.  It will come down to a question of, was Trump part of the decision tree to overthrow the election, or was he just a figurehead?  (Answer:  he was directing it, but he will claim it was all Mark Meadows’ doing.)
  • Fox has two pathways to talking points:  (1) accuse Democrats of the things Republicans are guilty of, and (2) accuse Biden of all the things people caught Trump doing.  It’s why Fox is harping on Biden’s mental health:  Trump was demonstrably mentally disturbed and cognitively impaired.  Fox wants to set up a “whataboutism” argument.
  • Puddings:  Corn is the winner in the savory category.  In the sweet:  rice, chocolate, butterscotch.  I’m on the fence about tapioca. Pudding Pops are not pudding.  Bread pudding, while an excellent dessert, is a casserole, not a pudding.  And I have no freakin’ idea what black pudding is.
  • This next week is going to be fun, but not thrilling.  Lots more subpoenas and indictments coming, but no big ones.  The show is getting more interesting every day.
