The Washington Post reports that the Republican National Committee has filed for a permit to present a fireworks show at the Washington Monument after President Trump’s republican nomination acceptance speech on Thursday, August 27th.
The permit has not yet been granted. One major hurdle is that the RNC requested that the fireworks display be allowed to start at 11:30 p.m. local time. DC city ordinances require that events that make “unreasonably loud noise” be halted at 10:00 p.m
Trump is expected to make his acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House, a break from practice against using public and governmental property for political purposes. Questions about why Trump’s speech will not violate the Hatch Act have yet to be answered.
