After numerous outbreaks of coronavirus in its residence halls one week after requiring students to report to classes, the University of North Carolina has abruptly canceled in-person classes at its Chapel Hill campus, CNBC reports.
Since classes started last week, at least four dormitories reported outbreaks involving no fewer than five students each. The school reported that its “positivity rate” for tests jumped from 2.8% to 13.6% in just one week.
“As of this morning, we have tested 954 students and have 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine, both on and off campus,” the university said in a statement. It also stated that it only had four remaining designated isolation rooms available on the entire campus.
The UNC-Chapel Hill campus serves about 30,000 students.
