In direct and unhidden retaliation for the Walt Disney Company exercising its Constitutional right to free speech–a provision supported by the conservative-pushed Citizens United Supreme Court decision–Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced legislation that would repeal Disney’s status as a special taxing and governing body, the Miami Herald reports.
“I am announcing today that we are expanding the call of what they are going to be considering this week,’’ DeSantis said at a news conference held at the crime-ridden enclave The Villages, the site of massive voter fraud during the 2020 election. “Yes, they will be considering the congressional map, but they also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968 — and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District.”
The Reedy Creek Improvement District was the name given in the 1960s to the area of land where Disney World was developed. It provided Disney with great latitude in running the property on which the massive Disney operation in Florida, which employs nearly 80,000 people directly, and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in the state.
DeSantis is upset that Disney recognizes the existence of LGBTQ people–something DeSantis is trying to cancel in entertainment, education and politics. Disney announced last month that it will give the LGBTQ representation in its entertainment productions including movies, television shows and theatrics at their parks.
Believing that ignoring LGBTQ people and not talking about them will make it all go away, DeSantis claims that by having LGBTQ people around and acknowledging their existence is “grooming” children to be non-cis-gendered non-straight people, even though that’s not really possible because people’s sexual and gender identities are not something that can be superimposed on an individual by an outside observer.
