Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXIV

  • If Democrats were as craven as Republicans in pushing false Constitutional concepts, Al Gore would have been the 43rd President of the United States, and according to their own statements, Republicans would have supported that ploy.
  • Herschel Walker:  four children with four different mothers.  Another “family values” conservative demanding to maintain the sanctity of marriage.  Like Britney Spears.  And Donald Trump.  And Bill O’Reilly.  And Newt Gingrich.  And Roger Ailes.  And Bill Cosby.
  • The fact that Trump flags greatly outnumbered American flags among the people who attacked the Capitol on January 6th shows you what it was truly about.
  • Imagine if the police at the Capitol on January 6th had used the “I thought my safety was in danger” excuse to open fire on the crowd of domestic terrorists storming the Capitol.  More than most street cops who kill unarmed people, those officers legitimately feared for their safety, yet only one shot was fired, and that was done to protect members of Congress.

  • GOP Talking Point:  Peaceful demonstrators outside a Supreme Court justice’s house is intimidation that needs to be prosecuted.  Different GOP Talking Point:  Violent terrorists who attacked Congress were legitimate protestors who were in no way trying to stop a government operation and shouldn’t be prosecuted.
  • Somehow, I don’t think commercials for men’s cologne are aimed at men.
  • In tightly contested races, Trump’s running around 50% in his picks (10 losses).  Many of his “wins” have been gimmes–Greg Abbott for the GOP nomination for Texas Governor, for example–so his endorsement doesn’t really seem to mean anything.
  • Spacing out the January 6th Committee hearings is a freakin’ brilliant move.  It not only gives the public time to discuss them, it also gives the Committee feedback from pundits and hosts about what needs to be covered more.
  • Daytime viewership for the hearings is coming in around 11 million on broadcast and cable networks.  It doesn’t include the streaming and radio audiences.
  • Why was Kimberly Guilfoyle paid anything–let alone $60,000–to make a speech at the rally to support her faux-father-in-law?  Should she not have done it out of her warped view of love and patriotism?  Do these people do nothing for free?
  • Funny that all the Republicans who complained about election interference are silent about the primaries that used the exact same processes.  That is, except for one New Mexico county, where they’re playing it to its already presaged conclusion.
  • Ginni Thomas calls her husband her “best friend” in numerous communications, but we’re expected to believe they didn’t tell each other stories about work?
  • A small insight into how my week went:  I cleaned the laundry room to feel productive.
  • Barry Loudermilk has been so consistent:  “There were absolutely no tours” to “There were no tours of the Capitol” to “There was a tour of the Capitol, but it as really nothing.”  He’s consistently changing his story.  Next up:  “Yes, I gave them a key, but I didn’t unlock the door.”
  • I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a parent today and tell your kids, “You can’t go outside to play because it’s too hot.”  Summertime was outdoor time for us.  Now, one-third of the country’s population is under an extreme heat advisory.
  • Heard a statistic the other day that took me by surprise:  Heat is typically the weather event that kills the most people in the United States annually.  And that number has been on an upward trend over the last 25 years.
  • Going to dinner at a friend’s house and you’re asked to bring dessert:  do you make it from scratch or buy it in the store?  Is it a written-in-stone rule for you?
  • Monty Python is the king of comedy troupes.   Kids in the Hall, Second City and the Upright Citizens Brigade are legends.  The best political group:  the recently departed Capitol Steps.  Best sketch comedy show:  Trigger Happy TV.  And the only part of SNL worth a damn is “Weekend Update.”
  • Stock up, folks.  It’s only going to get better.
