Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXXII

  • A former President of the United States of America is being investigated under the Espionage Act.  Let that sink in.  Jesus fucking Christ…
  • …meanwhile, the sitting president is on the verge of passing landmark economic, environmental and senior care act that will positively impact generations to come.  What a bookend to the week.
  • The US is not a “Third World” banana republic as panty-twisted conservatives claimed after the Mar-a-Lago search.  We’re a First World Constitutional Republic, where no one is above the law, and we’re acting like it.
  • The “Lock Her Up” crowd is upset that laws are being legitimately enforced using the justice system.  Cry me a river.
  • Don’t think for a second that Republicans’ hatred of law enforcement is new.  It’s not.  This goes back to G. Gordon Liddy advising radical conservatives to “aim for the head” of ATF agents who, he said, would be invading their homes after the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban was passed.  They don’t respect police or law enforcement when they’re arresting them for breaking the law.  Only Democrats have to obey the law.
  • Where’s Mitch McConnell?  He’s been silent on the Mar-a-Lago search while his Party gets closer to going over the cliff.  Kevin McCarthy’s no leader; he’s a buttkisser.  McConnell’s gotta stomp the trash in the House who want to defund the FBI.
  • I wonder if the FBI search warrant had to list all Trump’s aliases:  John Barron, The Donald, Unindicted Co-conspirator #1, John Miller, Orange Pharoh, David Dennison.
  • More than 440 times:  that’s how many times Trump invoked the Fifth Amendment.  440!  That’s astounding.
  • I admit:  I was wrong about Trump challenging the release of the warrant.  I have a tendency of underestimating people’s potential for self harm.
  • Whatever happened to Chanel Rion, the OANN who would ask the most sycophantic questions when she forced her way into White House press briefings during the Trump Administration?  I bet Peter Doocy misses her, since he inherited the “Most Stupidest Correspondent” moniker at her departure.
  • Remember:  in a civil case–unlike a criminal prosecution–refusing to answer questions by invoking the Fifth Amendment allows the jury to infer you’re trying to hide criminal responsibility.  By invoking The Fifth, Trump effectively sealed a judgment against him.
  • Amazed to find out legendary singer/songwriter James Taylor never learned to read music.  He’s played with symphonies, but can’t read a note.  He just watches, listens and plays.
  • During Trump’s administration, the US rank on the corruption perception index went from 16th in 2016 (Obama’s last year) to 25th in 2020 (Trump’s last year).
  • The cult of Tucker Carlson is an actual threat to the nation, its Constitution and its people.  Claiming that the FBI chose a week where he was on vacation to raid Mar-a-Lago demonstrates straight-out delusion.
  • I just learned that UNESCO has a category of “intangible cultural heritage” that it strives to protect.  These are not permanent physical things like buildings or forests or ruins.  They’re things like dance, song, sport and food:  Lithuanian cross making, Viennese coffee houses, the Argentine tango.  And they’re developing a process to categorize “digital heritage” it expects to carry cultural importance; surely being Rick-Rolled will be enshrined.
  • If I had to pick a few things to say were part of America’s intangible heritage:  baseball, fast food and gerrymandering.  Oh, and mass shootings.  Many many mass shootings.
  • Mrs. Jack is undertaking a tricky knitting project.  She says knitting is a combination of counting and cursing.  I can attest to her description.
  • Swedish fish were the original gummy candy, and they stand at the top of the heap.  But Gummi Bears are climbing the hill. I don’t put Starburst in the gummi category; they are a class by themselves.  And candy corn is…. wax.
  • It has been a week, hasn’t it?  It started at 10 and stayed there.  It’s like it never let up.  I don’t mind as long as it continues its current trajectory.
