After years of taking a back seat to animal-named pathogens – swine flu, avian flu, monkeypox, etc – and even beer with the Coronavirus, vegetables finally are getting an illness of their own with this new “tomato flu” currently going viral in India, with dozens of children sickened in as many as three states on the subcontinent, the Guardian reports. It’s not clear if tomato flu, named as such for the red lesions it causes, is its own virus or an aftereffect of dengue fever infection. It does however appear to spread via contact between toddlers given their dirty lifestyle habits, per scientists.
