A man dressed in a FedEx uniform entered the home of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas in East Brunswick, New Jersey, Sunday evening, shooting and killing her 20-year-old son and wounding her husband, the New Jersey Globe reports.

The judge’s son, 20-year-old Daniel Anderl, a freshman at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene.   He was shot in the heart as he opened the door to the phony FedEx driver, according to ABC News.

Her husband, Mark Anderl, 63, a criminal defense attorney and former Assistant Essex County Prosecutor, is in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.

Judge Salas was not injured in the attack, and the suspect remains at large.

Nominated by President Barack Obama in 2010 to serve as a District Court Judge, Judge Salas was the first Latina to take the federal bench in New Jersey.

Multiple jurisdictions are cooperating into the investigation.  No motive has been identified.  Salas is the judge on the case against DeutscheBank in regards to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Karimi v. DeutscheBank Aktiengesellschaft et al. but authorities are hesitant to tie the attack to any case the judge is working or any clients of her husband’s.

In a statement, the FBI Newark office said, “The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick Township, New Jersey earlier this evening, July 19.
