Brent Scowcroft, the only person to serve as National Security Advisor for two presidents, has died Thursday of natural causes at the age of 95, the Associated Press reports.
The NSA for both Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, Scowcroft retired from the Air Force, where he held the rank of lieutenant general, to serve in the Ford Administration. He later joined the GHW Bush administration, where he helped guide policy in the post-Soviet era.
Scowcroft also was a vocal opponent to the 2003 invasion of Iraq under the GW Bush administration, debating the administration’s claim that Saddam Hussein supported terrorist groups and arguing that an invasion of Iraq would critically damage US standing internationally.
