The board of trustees of Liberty University requested that real estate developer and University president Jerry Falwell Jr. take an indefinite leave of absence from his post after Falwell posted inappropriate photographs of himself and a woman on his social media account, the Washington Post reports.
Falwell has acceded to the board’s request.
The statement from the board of trustees reads in its entirety:
The Executive Committee of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, acting on behalf of the full Board, met today and requested that Jerry Falwell, Jr. take an indefinite leave of absence from his roles as President and Chancellor of Liberty University, to which he has agreed, effective immediately.
Last week, Falwell posted to his Instagram account a photo of himself, with a drink in his hand and his pants unbuttoned, apparently partying on a yacht. After the photo started circulating online, he removed the post.
According to Falwell in an interview with a Lynchburg radio station, as reported by NPR, the woman in the photo is his wife’s assistant.
“It was weird,” Falwell told the interviewer. “She’s pregnant, so she couldn’t get her pants zipped. I had on a pair of jeans I hadn’t worn in a long time, so I couldn’t get mine zipped either. So I just put my belly out like hers.”
Falwell has also been connected to other acts unbecoming of a representative of an institution billed as the largest christian university in the world. News reports had him entering into a business deal with a pool boy from a resort to fund a hostel marketing to gay men.
Falwell also reportedly enlisted the help of President Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen to obtain some photos of him and his wife in sexual acts.
Additionally, Falwell and the University have come under criticism both internally and externally for using weekly convocations which students are mandated to attend to promote friends and political allies of Falwell, including Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. Many black athletes, students and faculty have transferred from the university due to the perceived culture of discrimination condoned by college administration.
