During his press briefing today, President Trump once again repeated the lie that children are not at risk for coronavirus, saying that children “don’t transport or transfer it” contrary to medical studies, the Washington Post reports.
Trump was asked by a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics that shows nearly 100,000 children got the coronavirus in the last two weeks of July. Trump downplayed the risk to children.
“I think, for the most part, they do very well,” Trump said. “They don’t catch it easily, they don’t get very sick, and according to the people I’ve spoken to, they don’t transport or transfer it to other people, or certainly not easily.”
Medical and public health professionals have noted that children aged 10 to 19 have as high infection and illness rates as adults, although the virus tends to impact adults more severely. Many severe conditions that impact children have been connected to coronavirus, and schools that have opened have seen the virus spread among the student population.
