One hundred thousand people–one percent of nation’s population–took to the streets of Minsk, the capital of Belarus to protest the reelection claim of Alexander Lukashenko, who reportedly used a variety of tactics to rig the vote, the Guardian reports.
For the fifth consecutive weekend, Belarusians held mass demonstrations challenging Lukashenko’s claim that he won 80% of the popular vote in the August elections.
Political opponents to the president have reportedly been threatened and even exiled from the country. Multiple irregularities have been reported by election officials, including election judges being told to sign off on blank or pre-completed prior to ballots being collected.
Like Trump, Lukashenko is a Putin acolyte who has been in office more than a quarter century. And like Trump, Lukashenko has deployed national security services to quell the protests.
