According to Department of Labor statistics, 880,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits during the week ending September 12th, with the previous week’s estimate increasing by 9,000 to 893,000.
Using new methodology, the DoL was able to report claims under one million per week for the last three weeks, but the elevated unemployment claims report shows that companies are still shedding jobs as the impact of the coronavirus grips the economy.
The total number of people receiving some type of unemployment assistance rose by 98,000 week-over-week to 29,786,000, compared to 1,498,000 during the same time last year.
