“After the election, we’ll get the greatest stimulus package you’ve ever seen,” President Trump declared as he set off on a series of campaign stops as his reelection chances hang in the balance.
But unfortunately for him, republicans don’t seem interested in passing any meaningful coronavirus relief aid, the Washington Post reports.
No negotiations on a package have happened in the last few days, meaning that the next time Democrats and republicans discuss aid, the Democrats could likely have won control of the House, the Senate and the White House.
Congress will not meet until after the election. The republicans in the Senate spent most of the last three week rushing through a Supreme Court nomination and has not put any effort to negotiate a relief package. A $500 billion proposal died in the Senate, and fell far short of Trump’s desired package, which he said would be bigger than the one Democrats proposed.
The Democrats passed a $3.5 trillion bill through the House in May, but have modified their proposal to a targeted $2.2 trillion package. The White House has countered with a $1.6 trillion offer. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who seems to be suffering from a undisclosed medical condition, has largely been excluded from negotiations.
Trump, however, tweeted a rambling, incoherent statement blaming Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for the negotiation standstill.
Big GDP projected. Pelosi only looking to Bail Out badly run Democrat Cities. Tap, Tap, Taping us along. She has little interest in helping out the “people”.
