One of the Republican Michigan state legislators who met earlier this week with outgoing president Donald Trump said in an interview on Fox News Sunday that the state could face a Constitutional crisis if the Board of State Canvassers fails to certify the election Monday, the Detroit News reports.
“If there were to be a 2-2 split on the State Board of Canvassers, it would then go to the Michigan Supreme Court to determine what their response would be, what their order would be,” Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield said on “Fox & Friends” Sunday. “If they didn’t have an order that it be certified, well now we have a constitutional crisis in the state of Michigan. It’s never occurred before.”
The Michigan Constitution requires that the Board certify the vote totals after having each county submit certified vote tallies. All 83 counties have submitted certified vote counts and submitted them to the state board.
“If this way doesn’t work, obviously, now we have questions that have arisen in Michigan for the very first time,” Chatfield said. “It’s a place that I really don’t want to be in.”
