Margaret Keenan, 90-year-old grandmother of four, became the first person to receive the Pfizer coronavirus vaccination in the largest inoculation program in Britain’s history, the BBC reports.
And in typical British fashion, 81-year-old William Shakespeare from Warwickshire was the second in line. (Obviously not the playwright, but a namesake.)
“It’s the best early birthday present I could wish for, because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends,” said Keenan, according to the Washington Post.
The two were the first of an estimated 400,000 people to get the vaccines. The UK secured 800,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine; each recipient must get two doses for full effect. The US is expected to begin vaccinations in late December.
