More corporations halt political contributions, with many targeting Republicans who blocked Electoral College votes

An increasing number of corporations are suspending political donations, with some companies targeting the Republicans who voted to block the certification of Electoral College votes from the states, citing their encouragement of dissension that led to violence at the Capitol that cost five people their lives.

CBS News reports American Express, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Citigroup, Dow, Exxon, Facebook, Ford Motors, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Marriott, Mastercard and Microsoft have suspended all donations from their PACs.  Additionally, Walmart and Visa recently announced a review of political contributions.

Blue Cross Blue Shield, Citigroup and Blue Cross Blue Shield specifically said they would no longer contribute to the campaigns of 139 Republican House members and eight Republican Senators, including Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, for failing to support the Congressionally-mandated certification of the Electoral College vote.

Citi’s head of global government affairs Candi Wolff wrong on Friday in a memo to employees, “we want you to be assured that we will not support candidates who do not respect the rule of law.  We support engaging with our political leaders even when we disagree, and our PAC is an important tool for that engagement.”

American Express said, “Last week’s attempts by some congressional members to subvert the presidential election results and disrupt the peaceful transition of power do not align with our American Express Blue Box values; therefore, the [American Express Political Action Committee] will not support them.”
