The FBI arrested 40-year-old Eduard Florea of Queens, New York on Thursday for weapons violations after finding a cache of weapons and ammunition in his home to arm the Proud Boys on a second attack on the Capitol in Washington, the New York Times reports.
Florea admitted to FBI agents that he was supporter of the Proud Boys and had been in DC when members of the far-right extremist group vandalized Black churches in Washington.
Officials were tipped off that Florea posted threats on the life of incoming Democratic Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock as well as support for the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6th. “[D]ead men can’t pass laws,” Florea posted on Parler, the now disabled social media platform favored by domestic terrorists and conservatives.
Federal agents found more than 1,000 rounds of rifle ammunition, two dozen shotgun rounds, 75 military-style combat knives, two hatchets and two swords when they executed a search warrant on the home of the software engineer.
Using the screen name “LoneWolfWar” on Parler, Florea posted as the coup attempt at the Capitol was happening “here in New York we are target rich.” He went on to say that if another attack on the Capitol should happen, “I will fight so help me god.”
No guns were found at the scene, perhaps because Florea had been barred from possessing a gun in New York City’s five boroughs after a 2014 gun possession felony when he was found with a a semiautomatic shotgun and an AR-15 assault rifle.
He had been barred from owning weapons after his wife filed a complaint alleging Florea had choked her until she nearly lost consciousness while holding their infant daughter and then had threatened to kill them both with a knife. He served a year in jail for the offense.
