Rochelle Walensky, the director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that she has a sense of “impending doom” because of a recent jump in the number of daily new coronavirus cases, the Washington Post reports.
The feeling comes as the seven-day-running average of new cases jumped in the past week, to more than 60,000. This follows a week where Spring Breakers took over Florida and weeks after Texas and other states lifted public health guidelines, including mask wearing.
“We have so much to look forward to, so much promise and potential of where we are and so much reason for hope,” Walensky said during a White House news briefing, her voice breaking at times. “But right now, I’m scared.”
