Random thoughts Friday, Volume XIII

  • A Congressman caught up in a finance, sex and drug scandal.  Another attack on the US Capitol killing another Capitol Police officer.  MLB moves the All-Star Game due to voter suppression laws passed by Georgia.  Court cases against the former president ordered to proceed.  Who said it was going to be dull after Biden’s inauguration?
  • Who had “Matt Gaetz accused of child sex trafficking and drug distribution” on their GOP bingo card?  Oh… everybody?
  • After we put a lid on the April Fool’s stories yesterday, I had the sad realization that Thursday was the *one day* I could’ve posted a story about Meghan McCain and The View without backlash.  Opportunity lost.
  • 518 to 1.  That was the vote in the entire Congress–Senate and House–in favor on the 2017 Combating Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles Act.  The one “no” vote:  Florida Man Matt Gaetz.
  • Keep your pumpkin spice.  I’ll take salted caramel over it every day of the week.
  • Consider this:  Gaetz only called Nestor his “son” so he would be able to hang around teenage girls without seeming overly creepy.
  • Remember the multitude of Infrastructure Weeks in the previous administration?  Can you name one project that came out of all of them?  Neither can I.
  • The Capitol Police have incurred more work-related fatalities (four) in three months than most police forces have incurred in their entire existence.
  • Desserts:  Cake, sorbet, pie, then ice cream.  But I would forgo all those for a good cheese plate.
  • I’m absolutely amazed by the clarity of the case put together by the prosecutors in the former cop Derek Chauvin murder case.  And the witnesses are both sincere and moving.  Unfortunately, I’m not sure that’ll be enough to secure a conviction.
  • The photo op of Republican Senators zipping around in a gun boat on the Rio Grande to show how dangerous the undocumented migrants coming across the borders are completely backfired because all of them came back unscathed.  It would’ve been a perfect time for them to arrange a “little accident” for Ted Cruz.
  • Ted Lasso is worth the investment.
  • Republicans bitching about Major League Baseball pulling the All-Star Game from Atlanta in response to the Georgia GOP passing a draconian voter suppression law or corporations standing up for voting rights need to relearn what free market consumerism actually means:  that consumers can choose to spend their money where they see fit, and they can make those choices for whatever reasons they value.  Choosing to protect voting rights is a pretty damn good reason.
  • No matter how they’ve been demeaned in the past, American journalists are doing a fine job of holding those in power accountable.  They’re not perfect by any means, but then, neither is our nation.
