Random thoughts Friday, Volume XIV

  • Who had “Matt Gaetz is stupid enough to pay for sex with underage girls using a public money transfer app” on their 2020 GOP bingo card?  Oh… everyone?
  • Clarence Thomas reportedly wants to regulate social media companies.  Thomas, however, has voiced opposition to Net Neutrality regulations that would mandate internet service providers all websites would be given fair and equal access to bandwidth.  So Thomas is for giving government the power to decide what you see on social media sites AND giving corporations the power to determine what you can access online.
  • Fox “News” is going full-on Tucker Carlson with its online and prime time promotions.  It should just rebrand itself as “The Fiery Cross” and go all-in on its true mission.
  • Listening to the testimony of medical professionals in the Chauvin trial is like watching a Master Class in pulmonary functions.  It’s both fascinating and sad.
  • Remember Josh Hawley?  He’s trying desperately to regain the title of the Most Loathsome Republican because he’s been out of camera range and needs attention.
  • Apparently, retreating to a friend’s 108-foot yacht–complete with a full-time chef and two jet skis–can also stop a bad guy with a gun.
  • Clowns are scarier than creepy dolls.  And creepy dolls are scarier than heights.  But nothing is scarier than a small, quick snake.  I have no problem with big slow ones, but the small, quick ones make me run.
  • For once, I can say I wholly agree with John Boehner:  Ted Cruz can go fuck himself.
  • On this date 156 years ago, the Confederacy essentially died when Lee surrendered at Appomattox.  The CSA died, but Confederates are still working to tear the United States apart.
  • Beignets are just donuts with better branding.
  • Forget the congressman who paid for underage sex trafficking victims using a commercial money transfer app.  The most “Florida Man” thing in the story (so far) is the hand surgeon-cum-ganja investor who wanted to be the state’s surgeon general but ended up on the board of a metropolitan airport authority because he took that congressman to the Bahamas.
  • Hearing Mitch McConnell tell corporations to stay out of politics is like Donald Trump telling his bankers to not invest in real estate.
  • Two seminal events in the social acceptance of racial integration in the 20th century: the integration of the armed forces and Jackie Robinson debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Conservatives forget history in claiming the military and professional sports should never be instruments of social change.
  • Pfizer, then AstraZeneca then J&J.  No, wait… J&J, then Pfizer, then AstraZeneca.  AZ, then J&J then Pfizer.  Oh, screw it.  It doesn’t matter.  Just get the damn vaccine, whatever one is available
