Maya Angelou and Sally Ride will be the first two women to appear on US quarters as part of the American Women Quarters program of the United States Mint, ABC News reports. Five designs will honor Ride and seven will honor Angelou.
The Mint will feature twenty women on quarters minted through 2025, with up to five new quarters debuted each year. Poet and civil rights activist Angelou and NASA astronaut Ride will have their coins debuted in 2022.
“The Mint will issue circulating and numismatic quarter-dollar coins with reverse (tails) designs emblematic of the accomplishments and contributions of a prominent American woman beginning in January 2022,” according to the United States Mint’s office.
