Random thoughts Friday, Volume XX

  • Happy 70th Birthday to Al Franken, who made his mark (positively) in two industries:  comedy/entertainment and politics.
  • Biden Administration efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza were behind-the-scenes, quiet and professional.  Contrast this to what Trump would’ve done:  posting a tweet declaring “I told Bebe that I ordered a seizefire NOW!  No more misiles.  MUST listen to Trump!”
  • Republicans are more interested in the security of Israel than the security of the US Capitol.
  • Why anyone would want to attend a rally featuring Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene baffles me.  They’re not intelligent.  They’re not insightful.  They’re not inspiring.  They’re cheap performance artists.  Their field is politics and their product is outrage.  And they don’t even do that well.
  • The so-called “QAnon Shamin” was ordered to undergo a psychological exam.  Why everyone who spouts QAnon nonsense isn’t required to have one before going out in public is a mystery.
  • The owner of the company is under investigation.  The president of the company is under investigation.  The CFO is under investigation. The executive vice president is under investigation.  Guys, I’m beginning to think the Trump Organization isn’t legit.
  • First 45 ever bought:  “Saturday Night” by the Bay City Rollers.  First album:  “Chicago IX:  Chicago’s Greatest Hits” by Chicago.  First CD:  “License to Ill” by Beastie Boys.
  • Pre-pandemic, I would take our pup to the Bark Park after going to the grocery on Saturdays.  A full grocery bag meant playtime for him.  I went to the grocery store for the first time in more than six months today for just a few things, and when I re-entered the house, he sniffed the bag and immediately wanted to jump in the backseat of the car to go to the park.  He hasn’t forgotten.
  • Canine corollary:  I’m currently going down the YouTube rabbit hole with Bunny the Talking Dog, who uses electronic buttons that voices his thoughts:  “Bunny Need Walk.”  “Mommy Play.”  “Bunny Play Beach.”  But the one that really makes me scratch my head is when he asked, “Why Bunny Dog?”
  • Maricopa County residents are going to have to pony up at least $3 million to replace 400 voting machines that have been tampered with by the Cyber Ninjas.  States need to include in any recount orders a provision that anyone who destroys or renders useless voting equipment must pay for replacements out-of-pocket.
  • In a previous life, I was an economic analyst and journalist in the automotive industry.  (I was even a member of the International Motor Press Association.)  Once a year, the manufacturers would invite IMPA members to NASCAR tracks at various places around the country and let us drive virtually any model they had in production around the track.  They’d also set up an “off-road” track on the infield for SUVs, and they’d bring pre-production prototypes for us to drive.  That version of Jack is jealous that Biden got to drive the F150 Lightning on an open track.
  • Jeopardy! is the king of all game shows.  But the best classic game shows are:  The Price Is Right, Password and Match Game.  Cash Cab doesn’t get the respect it deserves.  And Wheel of Fortune is garbage.
  • The state government of Alabama has revoked its 27-year ban on teaching yoga in schools because, it said, it’s an anti-Christian movement.  It’s about time, because if there’s any state that needs to loosen up a little, it’s Alabama.
  • The Brits attempted to invade NatZero, and now they know how Cornwallis felt in 1781.
