The Department of Homeland Security announced a plan to place more than 400 DHS agents and officers to the Texas border to prepare to deport thousands of Haitians who have amassed in the area of the Del Rio border crossing, straining local resources.
DHS said it has shifted 2,000 individuals to other processing centers already and it closed the border crossing station at Del Rio. According to a DHS statement, the third step is to “secure additional transportation to accelerate the pace and increase the capacity of removal flights to Haiti and other destinations in the hemisphere within the next 72 hours.”
According to the mayor of Del Rio, more than 14,000 Haitians have encamped in Del Rio, fleeing the economic instability and infrastructure chaos of the nation that’s been devastated by earthquakes, hurricanes and corruption.
