Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin announced Thursday that he will appeal his conviction for two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter for killing George Floyd, whose May 2020 murder sparked the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Associated Press reports.
Chauvin was convicted of one count each of second degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. He was found guilty by a jury in April 2021 and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison during his June 25th sentencing hearing.
According to filings, Chauvin intends to appeal based on 14 separate grounds, including the fact that the judge in the case refused a change of venue request out of Hennepin County. His filing was made one day before the 90-day window to appeal expired.
