For the first time, the Red Cross has declared a “national blood crisis” due to the critically low supply of blood used for patients in crisis, pleading with eligible donors to schedule a donation soon, CBS News reports.
The statement, made in coordination with America’s Blood Centers and the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies, notes “If the nation’s blood supply does not stabilize soon, life-saving blood may not be available for some patients when it is needed.” Officials say some metropolitan areas have less than a one day’s supply of blood available.
Blood donation rates are 34% lower than a year ago, attributable to the COVID pandemic. If you can donate, please make your appointment here.
