Dem Georgia gubernatorial candidate and democracy-slinging boogeywoman of Peach State MAGA fanboys’ nightmares Stacey Abrams cameoed as the “President of United Earth” on a recent episode of the Paramount+ streaming prequel series Star Trek: Discovery, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Greg Bluestein reports. Abrams, a lifelong Trekkie, has talked a lot about how the series shaped her political perspective and has participated in fan events in Georgia in recent years.
To our knowledge Abrams is only the second modern American politician to portray a fictional politician on screen in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, following in the footsteps of Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy appearing in the majority of live-action Batman films released over the last three decades.
Here’s hoping this is the beginning of a new trend. Who wouldn’t love seeing Senator Bernie Sanders as a wisened old wizard in the upcoming Lord of The Rings TV series, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene as a Klingon in Star Trek, or Senator Josh Hawley as a genocidal fascist Imperial officer in Star Wars? Ted Cruz would be fucking perfect as a slimy alien lurking in the back of a cantina. AOC could totally sell a role as an idealistic young rebel. Make it happen Hollywood.
