US Army soldiers stationed in Italy visited Meri Mion of the village of San Pietro in Northern Italy to wish her a happy 90th birthday on Thursday – and to sheepishly apologize for soldiers from the 88th Infantry Division stealing her 13th birthday cake off her home’s windowsill in 1945 after a brutal firefight with the Nazis, the AP reports. The cake return ceremony took place amid the celebration of the 77th anniversary of the nearby town of Vincenza’s liberation in the closing days of World War II in Europe. Back in 1945, Mion, who turns 90 on Friday, had hidden with her mother in her home’s attic overnight amid gunfire being exchanged between American and German troops, leaving the cake unprotected the next morning from hungry, possibly drunk GIs who had been feted with wine by locals in Vincenza. “Tomorrow, we will eat that dessert, with all my family remembering this wonderful day that I will never forget,” said Mion. Details of the cake’s provenance were unknown but we can only hope the soldiers were thoughtful enough to pick it up from a quality local bakery rather than baking it in an Army mess kitchen, as a cake made from boxed Duncan Hines cake mix and “funfetti” frosting would be nothing short an international embarrassment.
