Plans for a sequel to the 1984 cult classic This is Spinal Tap will reunite director Rob Reiner with surviving members of the fictitious English heavy metal band Spinal Tap as they mount a farewell tour, Variety reports.
Lead singer David St. Hubbins, lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel and bassist Derek Smalls–portrayed by Michael McKeon, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer, respectively–have signed on for the sequel, which will likely be distributed in 2024. The search for a drummer for the band–a position which has taken out some fine musicians under unusual circumstances–will continue.
The goal is to have a mockumentary done in the style of The Last Waltz, the award winning documentary of The Band’s final tour directed by Martin Scorsese, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the original film.
