Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXII

  • The major difference between political philosophies is that conservatives want to make the world better for themselves, whereas liberals want to make the world better for all.
  • I’m old enough to remember when a Republican president resigned his Life Membership in the NRA to protest their unending support for the sales of weapons of war.
  • Their ideas of self are so tied up with their assault weapons, they literally cannot imagine a single day of their lives without them.  They don’t even want to try because they’re scared they’ll lose their very identity.
  • Today–Joe Biden’s 500th day in the Oval Office–brought news of continued strong job growth.  Even if job growth slows to a normal pace of 210,000 on average per month for the rest of his first term in office (he’s currently averaging 540,000 per month), Biden will oversee the creation of more jobs than all non-Reagan post-war Republican presidents combined–in just one term.
  • Can anyone name more than one spouse of a Supreme Court justice?  Not even just the sitting ones; any one’s spouse?  I mean, besides Ginni.
  • Vodka sauce is very underappreciated.  Vodka sauced was how I spent my thirties.
  • The Number One cause of death for children from newborns to 18 years old is gun violence. Not coronavirus.  Not car wrecks.  Not drugs.  Guns.  But CRT will ruin our children, they want you to think.  So let’s not teach about racial parity and start learnin’ ‘em up about ballistic shields.
  • Putting it plainly:  Ron DeSantis is corrupt.  He’s using the powers of his office to punish people and organizations that disagree with his prejudices.  This harms his constituents through the loss of business, but it bolsters his cred with the ignorant base.
  • The Supreme Court–designated by the Constitution to protect Americans’ rights–are violating a lot of their employees’ rights by demanding communications records for their internal investigation into the leak of the Alito Roe draft opinion.  So it’s for the Court to violate employees’ rights to protect their privacy, but it’s not okay for the public to require recusal of a justice because his personal life is private.
  • With Republicans complaining about a two-tier justice system after the Sussmann acquittal, they’re actually complaining that a jury of their peers do not support their version of reality.
  • Have you ever had one of those weeks where you realize immediately your life will never be the same afterward?  That was this week for me.
  • Republicans question why so many conservatives are being prosecuted.  Simply, it’s because they’re the ones caught committing crimes.  If you don’t want to be prosecuted, don’t commit crimes.  It’s that simple.
  • Why people believe Jonathan Turley, Dinesh D’Souza or John Solomon baffles me.  Both have been shown questionable judgment, and in Solomon’s case, outright dishonesty.  Hell, D’Souza was convicted and served time for his malfeasance.
  • Mike Pence is running to lead a Party whose members just 16 months ago chanted for his lynching.  And he’ll be running against the guy who put out the contract on him.  The candidates will have to go through a metal detector before entering the debate stage.
  • I daresay Canada has a better form of representative government than the U.S. has.  In Canada, their members of Parliament listen to what their constituents want as far as gun safety.
  • The January 6th Committee’s televised hearings won’t change anyone’s mind.  Pro-Trump people won’t watch it because Fox will counterprogram with Tucker Carlson’s hate speech, and they’ll spend the rest of the day showing 20-second clips followed by 12 minutes of discussion about why investigating an attempt to undermine the Constitution is un-American.
  • Mrs. Jack is a fan of fruit pies:  apple, cherry, blueberry, etc.  I favor “creme” type pies:  Key lime, banana cream, pumpkin, cheesecake (which is actually a pie, not a cake).  This polar opposition has not impacted our marriage in the least.
  • I have a (perhaps inappropriate) habit of telling people I’m proud of them for things they’ve accomplished.  Family members, neighbor kids, college friends, co-workers and former co-workers.  I’m proud to call them friends.
  • Donald Trump threatened our nation’s leaders, our Constitution, and our future on January 6th.  The threat was coming from inside the White House.
