As a massive heatwave encompasses the state, Texas residents will likely not face massive power outages thanks to solar and wind power production that has been brought online in the last year, Reuters reports.
ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas which governs the self-contained Texas power grid, said that the demand on the grid could hit a record 78,532 megawatt level next week. Thanks to solar and wind power generation sources incorporated in the last year, the state was able to increase its power output to more than 90,000 MW.
The increase in power production will help offset the longterm problems of the fossil fuel delivery systems relied on during the February 2021 winter storm that froze equipment that provided fossil fuels like natural gas to power plants and homes, a situation that left an estimated 246 to 700 people dead and prompted Senator Ted Cruz (R-Quintana Roo) to flee to his home district in Mexico.
