Random thoughts Friday, Volume XCI

  • I got emotional watching the new video of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer hearing the news from Mike Pence that the House chamber would be reopened in about an hour.  A tear rolled down as I realized that was the moment our republic was safe.  The Republican VP telling the Democratic Congressional leaders that it will soon be safe to continue with our functioning democracy to confirm his successor was what this country needed.
  • Walker did enough in today’s debate to stem supporters’ concerns about his mental capacity.  He repeated the talking points often and well, just like he was trained to do.  Warnock had a solid performance, but being a kind man, did not attack Walker’s multiple weaknesses enough.  Tonight could have ended the campaign, but it will linger.
  • Strange thing:  no media outlet has referred to the Crimean bridge explosion as a suicide bombing.
  • When a decision like the one against Alex Jones–nearly $1 billion in damages against him–the courts should order all his property be put into receivership immediately so it can be liquidated and divided among the plaintiffs.  The punishment should be immediate, not delayed years in appeals.

  • Jones misses the point of the judgment:  It’s not to give money to the victims.  No amount of money can compensate them for their pain.  The judgment is draining him of resources so he cannot terrorize other victims and their families again in the future.
  • The decision against Jones is not dischargeable via bankruptcy.  He will never get relief from that debt.  He will forever be in court, fighting the decision, paying lawyers for the rest of his life, until he pays off every cent of the judgment.  I hope it follows him to Hell.
  • Twenty years ago, two of the most trusted institutions in the United States were the Supreme Court and the US Secret Service.  Conservatism has destroyed that.
  • The January 6th committee hearings were a well-produced map of what happened before and during the domestic terrorist attack on Congress.  Unfortunately, the people who could learn the most from them would never watch them in a hundred years.
  • I believe there are a significant number of Republicans, particularly in the House, who include in their calculus about running for reelection if holding public office helps fend off criminal charges for a variety of activities.
  • I learned this week that NBC had a sitcom at the turn of the millennium called “Tucker” about a lonely teen, rejected by his parents, and unseen by the girl he longs for.  It lasted ten episodes.  Little known fact:  the series running on Fox is a reboot of that original series, with the same character, 25 years older, facing the same challenges.
  • Bob Costas has the most distinctive voice of any national sports announcer, and he still makes broadcasting a baseball game against two teams you don’t care about a pleasure to listen to.
  • Lindsey Graham was very upset with the results of the Fat Bear of the Year contest because it’s not what he was thinking.
  • The *right* to do something is different than the authority or the duty to do something.  Mike Pence did not have the right or the authority to overturn the 2020 election on January 6th, and he had the duty to certify the result.  People need to understand the differences between the meanings.
  • The best part of making a PB&J is, after cutting your sandwich in half (because it’s the law), squeegeeing the knife blade with your fingers to salvage that mix of peanut butter, jelly and crumbs.
  • It’s really heartening to support a local business that makes a pledge to help the community they’re in.  Given the choice–from your Main Street to your shopping on Amazon–choose the small business option.
  • Did you get your mail-in ballot yet?  If so, mail it back right away.  Don’t dawdle.  Make sure your friends do the same.  Remember:  Nag.  Be a pest.  Do whatever you have to do to get your like-minded friends to cast a vote in this midterm.
  • John Durham…. dude… you were entrusted with the mission of taking the Deep State down from the inside by exposing institutional corruption.  Instead, you indict a witness for a process crime as your final case.  You are a failure, but you’ve demonstrated the integrity of the institutions you sought to destroy.
  • I read way too much political shit:  newspaper stories, magazine articles, books.  I need to fit in a mindless novel more frequently, but I always find myself drifting to a biography or a non-fiction account of some event.  And then an economics study.  Or a piece on the Hubble.  I’m rarely drawn into a novel’s plot to the point where I’m vested.
  • We’re starting that 10-day period where the trees are colorful and we’re not swearing as we’re raking up leaves.
