- The race I’m watching on Election Night: Maryland’s 1st Congressional District. Heather Mizeur (D) v. Andy Harris (R). A pro-Trump sedition supporter, Harris was comfortable in the Eastern Maryland district, but Mizeur is making a well-funded push that challenges Harris’s dominance. I don’t expect Mizeur to win–Maryland’s Eastern Shore is as red as Nebraska–but a narrow race will be a big early bellwether for elections across the country.
- Just 21 months into office, Biden has the sixth-highest job creation total of any post-war president. The only Republican above him on the list: Ronald Reagan.
- We could potentially lose our Republic because some people are more upset that a gallon of gas costs 50¢ more than they are about a Party who wants to nullify people’s votes.
- They’re targeting migrants, the LGBTQ community, intellectuals and Jews. Sound familiar?
- Remember the early web meme, “Glenn Beck raped and murdered a 13-year-old girl in 1990” free speech exercise that turned Beck’s habit of incorporating “some people say” into an anti-Beck campaign. The same needs to be done for Elon Musk to test his devotion to free speech.
- Metric to look at: How many Republicans are crossing over to vote for Democrats? My prediction: We’re about to see the largest crossover of Rs voting for Ds–or at least, not for Rs at the top of the ticket. That, along with new (and renewed) voters will tell the story.
- Turning the clocks back means we get one more hour of campaigning. Yay.
- Remember: the midterm election is a battle in a much bigger war. The war is for the fate of democracy in the United States. Regardless of Tuesday’s outcome, we must continue to protect the Consitution.
- Given the choice between preserving their wealth and power versus preserving the Constitution, Republicans will always choose the former. It’s why they’re backing Trump, not ideology. Trump as the leader of the GOP means they make dollars through donations and they maintain their positions in the Party. They need the Trump regime to rule the GOP long enough for them to find the next fundraising focus.
- I’ve learned certain things are designed to intentionally disadvantage left-handed people. Zippers are one of them. Scissors another.
- Yes, the “Glenn Beck raped and murdered a 13-year-old girl in 1990” bit started as a Gilbert Gottfried joke.
- I’ve spent most of the last two weeks unable to write or type effectively let alone anything physical, and yet my smartwatch has notified me “Goal achieved” repeatedly. I obviously need new goals.
- Perhaps the most absurd sandwich I’ve ever had was in Auburn, Indiana: a pork tenderloin sandwich. It looked to be a pork filet pounded to about a quarter-inch thin so it was the diameter of a frisbee, then breaded and fried. It was then put on a normal four-inch hamburger bun, with three pickle slices placed on. Three pickle slices on a frisbee of deep fried pork.
- From a visual arts perspective, I love mobiles and whirligigs. (Check out the huge one outside the American Visionary Art Museum.) The various moving parts in a well-built one can be mezmerizing. Sculptures in general are more appealing to me than paintings, perhaps because I’m not educated in art and appreciate the engineering.
- Tuesday’s Election Day. If you voted early, volunteer to drive others to vote. Hold a candidate sign at a polling place. Ask friends if they’ve voted. Remember: when we vote, we win.
- The most influential toy I had as a child were Legos. If I could, I’d put a Lego room in every school in the country. Math, physics and art all in one toy with endless possibilities. And I think many adults would beam with happiness if they got a Lego set this holiday.
- Crowd the polls. Get out the vote. Do not listen to anyone who says the election is decided, one way or another.
