Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXII

  • In just 25 months, Joe Biden has become the fourth-best post-WWII president for job creation.  With the February jobs report, he overtook his former boss.  Next up:  LBJ.
  • Many people suffered lingering trauma during the pandemic.  A large portion of that trauma, because Donald Trump was in the White House.
  • CPAC has jumped the shark.  It was supposed to be the center for conservative thought leaders, influencers and most importantly, the young.  Emcee Matt Schlapp–his personal indiscretions/assaults notwithstanding–has made it the center for only the conspiracy-driven, fringe and most importantly, the MAGA.
  • If Murdoch were smart, he’d fire Carlson and Hannity immediately.  Sounds strange to boot your top personalities, but to save his larger investment, he needs to show a judge and jury he’s taken the issue seriously. Of course, shareholders could do the same by ousting Murdoch, who does not own a majority of Fox shares.
  • Not a deep Doctor Who fan, but the Van Gogh episode “Vincent and the Doctor” is a superb episode of television.  The story stands on its own:  you only have to have a passing knowledge of the art world or the series to enjoy it.  And the ending is lovely.
  • Donald Trump is so lazy (How lazy is he?)… he’s so lazy he’s using letters written TO him to fill a book FOR him.  Trump’s new publication attempts to duplicate the significance of one of my favorite books, Letters to Lincoln, but instead of interesting correspondence, it will be filled with fanmail.
  • Conservatives are so scared of brown people coming into the country, they’d rather change state laws to let 12-year-olds work low-wage jobs.  Kids should be blowing five dollars for a new movie showing a matinee, not working for five bucks an hour in a factory.
  • Every team of young entrepreneurs needs an older hand to guide them so they don’t overreact to unpredicted, but not unusual, problems that happen to virtually every business.  In my career, Harry, a partner in my first company, played that role.  How the World War II fighter pilot tolerated the youngsters is beyond my comprehension.
  • I was put in Twitter jail for telling Newt Gingrich to take a long walk off a short pier.  Twitter said I was encouraging suicidal thoughts and self-harm.  I appealed, but apparently they didn’t think “I thought he could float” was an adequate rationale.
  • A lesser story of the Murdaugh trial was a man dressed in yellow, orange, and other brightly colored suits catching the eye of court watchers.  Turns out he’s an 80-year-old retired doctor serving as a state constable, providing security at the trial.  Because nothing says “security at a murder trial” than an loudly-dressed 80-year-old in the gallery.
  • Mike Pence is claiming he’s covered under the “Speech and Debate” clause of the Constitution as the VP is the President of the Senate even though the rules of the Senate bar the President of the Senate from engaging in any speech or debate on the Senate floor.  That seems like a gap in logic.  (Not to mention the VP/President of the Senate isn’t an actual Senator.)
  • Five days from now, the Ides of March, could be a very consequential in the history of our nation, as Trump could testify before the Manhattan grand jury as the target of a criminal investigation.  And it’s not a moment too soon.
  • I’ve heard that Michael Franti song dozens of times.  Why did it bring a tear to my eye today?
  • A flea reappearing in a cameo on the shitpile that is the Trump legal condition, Jenna Ellis’s censure for lying by the Colorado court was less than she deserved.  Any lawyer who knowing lies about a legal case to the public is doing a disservice to the Court and should be disciplined as if they were lying to a judge.  A judge, after all, is a representative of the citizenry.
  • Commercial for Joe Wilson’s Democratic opponent in 2024:  a still shot of the sign in front of the Floyd Spence Post Office in Lexington, South Carolina, reminding voters that the only thing Wilson’s done during his seven terms in Congress is gotten that named and asking, Are you getting your money’s worth?
  • Karinne Jean-Pierre saying of the Republicans, “Not my circus; not my monkey” shows Bidenisms have infected the entire West Wing staff, and it’s adorable.
  • Magazine and newspaper racks were a great way to measure a community’s priorities, kinda like a “wordcloud” of its day.  More covers covering a single person or event were a good or bad thing depending on the news. It’s hard to recreate digitally that impression from multiple publishers at once.
  • I never realized how much Hank Azaria’s regular voice sounds like Jon Stewart until I heard a TV interview with him while I wasn’t paying attention, looked up thinking I was going to see Stewart, and had my mind blown.
  • Mrs. Jack and I will be chaperoning prom this year, and no, I will not bust a move on the dance floor–for fear of bustin’ the dance champion image I cultivated doing the chicken dance and Electric Slide at weddings in the 1990s.
