Four-term Republican Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general, said he was “shocked” at the evidence presented in the indictment against former president and serial liar Donald Trump for retaining classified government documents and obstructing the investigation, NBC News reports. But before you think Republicans are growing spines, remember Bacon is running in a district Joe Biden won in 2020 and which he only held on to by three percentage points in 2022.
“As a retired brigadier general who worked with classified materials my entire career, I am shocked at the alleged callousness with which the documents were handled,” Bacon said in a statement his office released to the media but did not post on social media. “The alleged obstruction to the requests of the National Archives and FBI, if true, is inexcusable. … I’m the same person who criticized Hilary Clinton for knowingly and willfully storing thousands of classified emails on her unclassified computer, and thought the DOJ failed in holding her accountable. I believe in using the same standards and ask the DOJ to do the same. No one is above the law, and we demand due process and expect equality under the law.”
