Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXXXIV

  • Trump’s irrefutable proof will join his health plan, his wife’s visa explanation and his infrastructure program as things we’ll never see.
  • Something feels different about the Fulton County indictments.  While I know there will be more federal indictments from Jack Smith for January 6th, the Fani Willis-led indictments are the first judicial action that’s summarized the points of the plot to overturn the voters’ choice.  
  • Is Botox a performance-enhancing drug for professional poker players?
  • George W. Bush and Dick Cheney should have been indicted for misleading the world before the Iraq invasion.  Reagan before them.  Nixon before them.  And, likely, at least a handful before him.  I honestly don’t know if any of them would’ve been convicted, but democracy demanded the trials.  We’re at this point because we didn’t do the hard things before.
  • You’d think after the first three–or four, depending on how you count–MAGAts wouldn’t be hyperventilating at Trump’s latest indictment, threatening to destroy the nation again.  The nation didn’t collapse the first three (or four) times Trump was indicted; it won’t happen this time.  Or the next. 
  • I always thought the Founders had bigger plans for the Electoral College but it just got wiped off the ledger. Like, there was supposed to be an Article IV branch of the government and it just got skipped. “Oh, you already started on the ‘Full Faith and Credit’ stuff after the IV?  Nah, nevermind.  S’not important.”
  • Nature is amazing.  There’s a spot in the Indian Ocean where “sea level” is 300 feet lower than the rest of the planet.  Scientists, who think they now understand the phenomenon, call it a “gravity hole,” a spot on Earth that pulls everything around it a little lower.
  • And speaking of Florida, the Ron DeSantis Disaster Tour ‘24 continues.  He’s playing to make the playoffs, not win the division.  He wants to be in the conversation in July.  I said it before:  the GOP will have a brokered convention.    
  • Take solace in the fact that the current cast of characters in the GOP entertainment industry circus–the Scott Baios, Tami Laurens and Kevin Sorbos of the Bubble–will fade away soon enough.  They’ll join Dog the Bounty Hunter and the Duck Dynasty family in the scrap heap of conservative folklore.
  • Trump to Zelenskyy:  “Just open an investigation into Hunter Biden.  We’ll do the rest.”  Trump to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in 2020:  “Just say the election results are in doubt and my Republicans will do the rest.”  There’s a pattern.
  • DeSantis is so worried about indecency, but he can’t get the duck at Disney World to put on a pair of pants.  Donald’s been walking around there “commando” for decades.
  • One of many weeks where I’m very proud of Mrs. Jack, but this week, I’m bragging.  Starting another year of teaching, and returning to the stage for a role in a play she’s got some history with.  My head’s been buried in the computer for the last few weeks, and want to make sure she knows I heard what she said.
  • This is one of those times that I wish disqus had an operational search function:  In 2017-ish, after seeing Trump use a Trump Org check for one of his hush money payments, I commented Trump would ultimately be convicted on a RICO charge.  Admittedly, I did not foresee in Georgia for election rigging, but I’m still claiming the W.
  • If I was limited to one style of cheese for the rest of my life–Cheddar, Swiss, Gouda, etc.–I’m going with Blue.  A good selection of varietals. Exceptionally versatile, from salads through desserts.  Strong on its own, and can be stuffed in olives.  
  • Trump, Giuliani, Ellis, Kraken, Meadows, Eastman, Clark, Chesebro and the rest:  The mugshots of the Fulton 19 ordered by the amount of glee I will have when viewing them the first them.
  • And by the way, on the cheese thing, you’re still allowed traditional grilled cheese sandwiches.  Kraft slices don’t count as cheese.  
  • Today is National Mail Order Catalog Day.  I remember them. They served us well.  Victoria’s Secret and LL Bean probably propped up the Postal Service for years.  Rest well, my friends.
