The official number of people missing after wildfires swept across Maui is 66, dropping by hundreds in the past few days as people check in with loved ones searching for them, the New York Times reports. Previously, the number of unaccounted-for was 385. The death toll stands at 115 confirmed killed, with search operations halted at then end of August, as Democratic Hawaii Governor Josh Green and other officials acknowledging that because of the fire devastation of some buildings, remains may never be found.
